Later, it became the seat of the Dukes of Infantado, whose palace still stands today. One of the best places to start exploring the city is the Palace of the Infantado, one of its most emblematic attractions. It was the former palace of the Mendoza family, who obtained the title of Dukes of Infantado. The family played an important role in the city’s development.
The city is home to the world’s oldest functioning lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which dates back to Roman times. Almost across the street from the palace is the Co-Cathedral of Santa María, a 14th-century building located on the site of an old mosque. Despite undergoing some renovations during the 17th century, its Mudejar style still prevails. Upon leaving the cathedral, you’ll find the striking 16th-century Chapel of Luis de Lucena. Its brick façade stands out, but it’s worth going inside to see the Mannerist frescoes that decorate the vault.
